AZTEC RULES BUNBURY STAKES

10 March 2023

4YO Star Aztec Ruler has reigned supreme in Bunbury taking out the 1400m Listed 2024 Bunbury Stakes.

With Steven Parnham on board Aztec Ruler sprung the gates better than anticipated forcing Steven’s hand to change tactics and ride on pace. On a day that favoured the leaders, it proved to be the right decision.

The leaders pushed the pace early and Aztec settled nicely into fourth position as he travelled into the bend.

At the 300m Aztec would make his move, level pegging with Searchin’ Roc’s and trailing Mood Swings, Steven would steer Aztec off the rail and split the gap. Aztec Ruler showed the turn of foot we have all become accustomed to and shot to the front, putting over a length on Mood Swings in a matter of strides.

Red Fifty Three would Challenge late with a mighty run down the inside but Aztec Ruler proved too classy, holding on by half a length to take out the $150,000.00 Bunbury Stakes.

The win improves Aztec Ruler's record to an impressive 6 wins and 3 second placings in just 12 starts.

After a disappointing first up run in the Pinjarra Classic where Aztec had travelled nicely before copping interference from a rival horse before being galloped on by another, Aztec would lose a few days in his preparation for the Bunbury Stakes while he recovered from a laceration and bruising on his hind leg. With an interrupted preparation the performance is a testament to the horse’s heart and ability.
